Sharing Your NRIC, Passport or ID Copy in Singapore? How to Protect Yourself
October 14, 2026 · Kova Core
In short: Unmarked photos of your NRIC, FIN, or passport are goldmines for identity thieves. Whenever you must submit a digital copy of an identity document, always cross-watermark the image with the specific recipient's name and the date, and never upload your raw ID to random cloud editing websites.
When Are Organisations Allowed to Ask for Your NRIC in Singapore?
Under the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) advisory guidelines in Singapore, private-sector organisations generally cannot collect, use, or disclose your physical NRIC or full NRIC copy unless:
- It is required by law (for example: hotel check-ins, subscribing to a mobile phone line, medical clinics, real estate tenancy checks under CEA/ICA rules, or employment verification under MOM rules), or
- It is necessary to accurately establish or verify your identity to a high degree of fidelity where failure to do so poses significant safety or security risks.
For casual memberships, lucky draws, or building visitor logs, organisations should not demand a copy of your NRIC.
Why Unmarked ID Scans Are Dangerous
Once you send a clean, unwatermarked photo of your NRIC or passport over WhatsApp or email, you lose control over where that file goes. If the recipient's email is compromised — or if a rogue agent saves the file — that clean image can be reused to:
- Apply for fraudulent loans or "buy now, pay later" accounts
- Register prepaid SIM cards or mule accounts
- Impersonate you in rental or Carousell scams (claiming to be a "verified seller" by showing your ID to victims)
How to Safely Watermark Your ID Before Sending It
A proper security watermark should:
- State exactly who the copy is for and why (e.g., "FOR HDB TENANCY APPLICATION WITH ABC REALTY ONLY — 14 OCT 2026").
- Run diagonally across the document, slightly overlapping non-critical background areas of the card (without blocking your face or ID number) so a scammer cannot simply crop the text out.
The Privacy Trap of "Free Online Watermark" Sites
Many people search Google for an online image editor to add text to their IC scan — inadvertently uploading their most sensitive identity document to a third-party server!
That is why we built the ID Copy Protector on Kova Core. It runs 100% locally inside your web browser using HTML5 Canvas:
- Your NRIC or passport photo never leaves your phone or computer.
- It overlays a clean, tamper-resistant diagonal watermark across the image in one click.
- If you also need to combine front and back scans into a single PDF, you can use our client-side JPG to PDF Converter or PDF Watermarker without a single byte being uploaded to the cloud.
